Drawing on decades of experience, Kim Culbertson explores how a joyful personal writing practice can deepen and energize the way we teach others. Through guided exercises, reflection, and discussion, you’ll discover ways to spark creativity in your classroom, support your students more effectively, and reconnect with your own reasons for writing.

Kim has conducted workshops for teachers and writers for over 25 years. She sits on the Writers Council for National Writing Project and is a consulting author for Heinemann Publishing. She is a founding member of Flash Fiction Institute and works as a mentor in the MFA in Creative Writing at Dominican University of California. She believes in the joyful practice of writing and hopes to share strategies to bring that joy into your own work as teachers of writing.

Meet Your Instructor

Author and Teacher Kim Culbertson

Kim is the award-winning author of five YA novels with Sourcebooks and Scholastic. Her first novel for adults Other People’s Kids (Sibylline 2025) was named a finalist for the California Independent Booksellers Alliance (CALIBA) 2025 Golden Poppy Award in fiction. Kim sits on the Writers Council for National Writing Project, is a founder of the Flash Fiction Institute, and works as a mentor with Dominican University of California’s MFA in Creative Writing. Her book 100-Word Stories: A Short Form for Expansive Writing (Heinemann 2023) blends her two professional loves: teaching and writing. She lives in Northern California. www.kimculbertson.com
